Museum Puget

Ibiza has produced some great painters who are relatively unknown in our times but are deserving of reappraisal. These are mainly artists who were born in the twentieth century, a period of sustained success for the avant-garde. This is the case with the Pugets who have now found their niche in a museum of monographs located in a strikingly beautiful late-Gothic mansion in the heart of Dalt Vila.

Narcís Puget Viñas (born Ibiza 1874, died Santa Eulalia 1960) is regarded as the guiding light and forerunner of Ibicenco painting in the last century. Known as ‘Portmany’, he was a role model and teacher for other celebrated artists of this time. He spent most of his life in the Pitiusas where he was also the first person to set up as a professional photographer. His most prominent contemporary and personal friend was Sorolla. His style is akin to Impressionism and is characterised by his predilection for portraying local customs and practices with scenes from rural and everyday life, charged with vitality and colour.

Narcís Puget Riquer (Ibiza 1916 – 1983) followed his father’s artistic star, though technically and aesthetically his work is very different. His paintings are, for the greater part, water colours portraying mysterious landscapes, the streets of Dalt Vila, Sa Penya and the Marina plus some strange portraits.

The same surname for two quite distinct styles, that of the father and that of the son. In April, their work went on long-term display in Can Llaudis house, Calle Sant Ciriac, near the Cathedral.

Yet another reason to wander through the maze of little streets in the Old Town and to look down on Ibiza as it once was. Onto an Ibiza that attracted not only artists and intellectuals but also adventurous souls from all over the world who were to have a strong influence in establishing the Island’s lasting and cherished prestige as a cultural haven.
