Ibiza means for Spain what Sylt means for Germany. Of course, as regards shape and size, Sylt at 99.14 km² has more in common with Formentera, 82 km². Also, Sylt has no mega discos, just small, select clubs like the Pony in Kampen. The island lies 220 km northwards from Hamburg’s North Sea coast. Barcelona and Ibiza are 280 kilometres apart. For the people of Barcelona, Ibiza represents the same as Sylt does for the inhabitants of Hamburg. Many of them have a holiday home there or frequently spend the weekend on the island. Quite a few citizens of Hamburg are also big fans of Ibiza and some of them have homes on both islands. A good eight years ago, two businessmen hit on the idea of inviting like-minded friends to a 'Sylt meets Ibiza' bash, to party Ibiza-style in the cool north. Since then, this 'do' has traditionally taken place at the Pony Club, complete with hippie accessories, sandy beach and Pacha flags to give that Ibiza touch. The absolute highlight of this year's decorations was a Mercedes-Benz bus built in 1965, in which Uschi Obermeier and boyfriend Dieter Bockhorn had once travelled half-way around the world. As usual, celebrities from business, showbiz and sport were on ‘Tom Tailor’ boss Uwe Schröder's and top architect Wolf Peter Schneider's guest list – Jan Fedder and Marion, Johannes B. Kerner and wife Britta, Michael Stich and Mrs Jessica Stockmann plus ‘Bild’ boss Kai Dieckmann to name but a few.
This party is one of the best and most famous on the island. Each year, German media reports on the happenings there. It has achieved cult status. The hosts and a rhythm combo greeted celebs as they arrived. Instead of a welcome drink of Cava Sangria, a special punch did the rounds. Fresh Sylt oysters and sushi made up the entrées to a sensational gourmet buffet and later, guests were delighted by the soulful voice of top artiste Deidra Jones. At midnight, potato soup and currywurst were served to keep up energy levels late into the night. To sum up, this party on Sylt was in no way inferior to anything that Ibiza has to offer. Wouldn't it be great to stage this event on Ibiza some time…
No, no, no. We are neither trying to be nostalgic nor debating the virtues of analogic vs digital again but simply informing you that every Thursday in the bar of Las Dalias you have the chance to dust down the vinyl collection...
Cala Bassa is in the news this month and not precisely because it is the best moment to enjoy the beach from one of CBBC beachbeds – which are fantastic – but because of the arrival of the City of Ibiza quadriathlon to celebrate its 12th edition.
This year it will be 40 years since the first fashion show that gave rise to Pasarela Adlib. To celebrate it, the Island Council has organised an exhibition that it has called 'The Adlib Revolution'.
