A gourmet trip for our readers

24. September 2011 | 00:30
Autumn is red wine season. We have therefore arranged a gourmet trip for our readers to one of the most highly rated bodegas in the Ribera del Duero – the prestigious Bodega Valduero. On the way we will stop over in Madrid and visit a very special gastronomic location.

We leave Ibiza airport on Friday morning, 21st of october and in Madrid we shall be staying at the four-star AC Carltoni hotel. This is very conveniently situated in the centre of Madrid. The famous Reina Sofia Museum, the Prado, the Thyssen Museum, the Botanic Gardens and Retiro Park are all within walking distance of the hotel. As, too, is our first gourmet destination: the old San Miguel market (see our detailed report here), where we will feast our way through the evening. After a tour of the covered market, the stallholders have invited us to their club above the market, a venue to which very few people ever have access, to a dinner where a cross section of the specialties that the market has to offer will be served.

On Saturday, our exclusive wine trip – organized by the renowned vinotheque Vila Vins in Ibiza - will take us to a bodega in the DO RIBERA DEL DUERO (DO = Denominación de Origen). There, we will visit one of the top Spanish wineries: Bodegas Valduero, owned and managed by the Garcia Viadero family. Valduero currently owns over 500 acres of vineyards of Tinto Fino, and produces a range of crianzas, reservas and gran reservas. In 2000, Valduero built a new winery, consisting of three tunnels built into a mountain. The winery also maintains the traditional “Old Cellars,” a XVII-century home with 1,000 meters of caves that houses 1,500 barrels of reserve wines. Valduero is focused on the quality range, from crianza to gran reservas, seeking to produce excellent and balanced berries with high acidity levels ideal for long ageing.
What would a wine trip be without a guided tour through the vineyards? We will take a walk around the estate (500 acres) and enjoy not only the landscape and views, but also learn more about what makes this wine growing region so special. Following a tour of the wine cellar, which is situated underground in a tunnel driven into a hill, we will taste the wines produced by the bodega over a rustic lunch.
On the Sunday, there will be an opportunity to visit the museums close to our hotel. Then in the late afternoon, we will head back to Ibiza again.
