Custo Dalmau has once again found time this summer to spend a few days on the Island. He has been visiting Ibiza since 1976 to relax and have a bit of fun. “This is where I find my greatest inspiration,” he confirmed, just a few days before jetting off to New York where he will present ‘Glam Rock Vagabond’, the latest Custo Barcelona collection to attract universal acclaim on the international catwalks. He took half an hour out of his busy schedule to talk to the readers of IBIZA STYLE.
He told us how the Dalmau brothers started out in graphic design 25 years ago. From this basis they came up with the idea of a ‘visual project you can dress with’. They learned about fashion as they went along – “to the extent that we know anything about it at all,” Custo adds modestly. In 1981 they designed their first T-shirt collection, the item of clothing that continues to be their hallmark and keeps their label vibrant. “Every graphic designer needs a medium. In our case that means textile. We decided on the T-shirt because it is a particularly functional item.” And all their designs revolve around the T-shirt: “For us, even a coat means a sort of T-shirt to be worn over other items of clothing. And a pair of trousers is a T-shirt to wrap round the legs…”
Their first collections were exclusively directed at the male market, “but eventually we had to broaden our appeal to include females because men don’t buy as many clothes.” No matter whether their designs are for ‘Him’ or for ‘Her’ they have attracted rave reviews everywhere in the world. This is particularly the case in the USA, where Custo Barcelona have opened their own outlets in all the major metropolises, and also in Italy.
We look forward to seeing their collections paraded at a national show in Spain again. “We would also be delighted but we are currently interested in fashion shows that have a strong international profile. Unfortunately, neither Madrid nor Barcelona are in the same league as New York at the moment.”
No, no, no. We are neither trying to be nostalgic nor debating the virtues of analogic vs digital again but simply informing you that every Thursday in the bar of Las Dalias you have the chance to dust down the vinyl collection...
Cala Bassa is in the news this month and not precisely because it is the best moment to enjoy the beach from one of CBBC beachbeds – which are fantastic – but because of the arrival of the City of Ibiza quadriathlon to celebrate its 12th edition.
This year it will be 40 years since the first fashion show that gave rise to Pasarela Adlib. To celebrate it, the Island Council has organised an exhibition that it has called 'The Adlib Revolution'.
The best thing is to be an electronic music fanatic and to discover in person how, when, and why Luciano, Carl Cox and Oakenfold managed to become what they are.
The direction taken by the legendary multi-purpose venue last summer pointed to interesting changes with respect to its becoming a platform for music, art, fashion and gastronomy.
