Ibiza has always been a magnet for creatives, artists and free spirits that think outside the box. A self-taught photographer, filmmaker and author, Harry Russell is one of them; a citizen of the world who has found a source of inspiration in the White Island that keeps calling him back. In 2026, Harry is celebrating 20 years as a photographer and is working on his first book to commemorate not only his career, but also his inspiring story \u2013 a tale of perseverance, courage and adventure, and one that is intrinsically intertwined with Ibiza.<\/p>\n
Harry\u2019s interest in photography was sparked in childhood as he watched his mother capture family memories on film. \u201cShe was a hobbyist with really old cameras from the \u201890s. She used to always take photos, and she used to document everything I did with a video camera,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I think being in front of the camera from such a young age must have had an influence subconsciously that I was drawn to the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Harry honed his camera skills outside of the classroom. \u201cI didn\u2019t do too well at school. I even failed photography,\u201d he laughs. \u201cMy tutor said my work was rubbish and I\u2019m probably not going to go anywhere with my photography if I carry on like this.I wouldn\u2019t say I was a natural at photography, but I\u2019ve always been a creative person. My love for the camera and creativity meant I found my own lane and way of learning. And when I did find that, I excelled and was able to travel around the world internationally, recognised as a photographer and filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harry first came to Ibiza in 2010, and like many island dwellers, has a funny story to tell. \u201cMy friends signed me up to do a dance audition for The Zoo Project \u2013 as a prank \u2013 and I ended up getting the job! But I freaked out and ran back to the UK and my 9-to-5, answering phones in a taxi office. I only returned to the island in 2014, with a camera.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nowadays, you\u2019ll rarely find him clubbing as Harry embraces the island\u2019s quieter side. \u201cNature, wellness, and the sunsets. I\u2019m here for the daytime,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n
A keen freediver, he loves capturing the island\u2019s underwater worlds. \u201cIbiza\u2019s water is the clearest I\u2019ve seen in the 53 countries I\u2019ve visited,\u201d he says. I also love photographing the old fisherman huts. I like showing the traditional side of Ibiza rather than its luxury image.\u201d<\/p>\n
Describing his style as emotive, playing with natural light and cinematic tones, Harry primarily shoots outdoors \u2013 always connected to nature or contrasting urban textures.<\/p>\n
With two decades behind the lens under his belt, he has witnessed immense changes not only in technology, but also through the rise of social media.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
